Is your baby suffering teething? is he/she in pain? does not want to sleep? always biting on his/her hands and crying .... well you need to read this article carefully
How can you know when your baby begins teething?
Here are some signs that your child is getting a new tooth:
- Your baby may become very fussy.
- He or she may have trouble falling asleep.
- He or she might not want to eat.
- unusual drooling may be seen
How can I make my baby more comfortable?
Fussiness. Sleeplessness. Refusing to eat. These behaviours can result from sore and tender gums. if this occurs Try to soothe the gums by massaging them gently with a clean finger; a moist gauze.
Letting your child chew on a teething ring or chilled carrot strips also may relieve some of the discomfort he or she is feeling.
The U.S Administration (FDA). Food and Drug Adminsteration has issued a warning about the use of numbing gels.Several teething gels are available for purchase without a prescription.
Many of these gels depend on benzocaine to numb the gums, which the FDA warns against its using. Unless a health care professional is watching the use and effect of these gels, the FDA recommends that parents of children younger than 2 years not use medications that contain benzocaine.
Many serious and fatal conditions had been sent to FDA called methemoglobinemia, a disorder in which there is reduction in oxygen of blood stream. Symptoms of methemoglobinemia can occur shortly after benzocaine use and include the following:
- paler blue-colored skin, lips and nail beds (cyanosis)
- shortness of breath
- fatigue
- confusion
- headache
- lightheadedness
- rapid heart rate.
If your child is suffering from methemoglobinemia, take him or her to the nearest hospital immediately. the FDA also warned against use of oral viscous lidocaine, a prescription medication, to treat teething pain. An overdose of viscous lidocaine can result in seizures, serious brain damage and heart problems.
visit the dentist
When the first tooth come into mouth (or by his or her first birthday), schedule a visit with the dentist. So the dentist will check for signs of tooth decay and talk with you about habits and conditions that may affect your child’s teeth. Your dentist also can show you the proper brushing way for your child’s teeth and care for that great new smile.

Eruption chart and sequence
First, we should agree on that teeth come into child mouth in pairs, as each jaw is divided into two similar halves by midline called quadrants, so we have 4 quadrants; 2 upper and 2 lower.
The eruption occurs in the two quadrants of the same jaw at the same time
Eruption sequence :
1- the lower two front teeth (lower A &B or primary central and lateral incisor ) at 6 : 7 months
2-the upper 2 front teeth (upper A&B or upper primary central and lateral incisor)
at 7 : 8 months
3-the lower first large tooth ( lower D or first primary molar ) at first birthday
4-the upper D at 14 months
5-the lower primary canine (lower C) at 16 months
6- the upper primary canine (upper C) at 18 months
7-the lower E (second primary molar) at 20 months
8-the upper E ( second primary molar) at 24 months
So, we notice that the tooth number 4 (D) precede the tooth number 3(C) in eruption therefore, the sequence is ABDCE.
N.B: the tooth cut its way to the oral cavity through bone and gum mucosa without a single drop of blood; this is because of the physiologic process of bone resorption mediated by enzymes.
What if the tooth didn't erupt at it's normal time ?
It's normal when the eruption is delayed by 6 months from it's known chronology ,but if it exceeds 6 months, you should visit your dentist and make a radiograph to show if it is congenitally mised or impacted.
